Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold

    I'm procrastinating

....because I don't feel like practicing or writing program notes. Which is what I should be doing right now. *sigh* I'm trying to get all my program notes done for my piano recital before school starts, because I know I'll be swamped with work and people and will doubtless forget about them until the last minute. So far I've only written about Bach. I have Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, and maybe Copland to go.....eek.

I just finished C.S Lewis's "Till We Have Faces". It's a really great book, for those of you looking for something new the read. I am always fascinated by Lewis's understand of man and our relationship to God -- he realizes that the world we live in is a mere shadow of what's to come, and it's so refreshing to read. I also love how he uses allegory and "myth" -- the "unreal" -- to explain the real, since this world, after all, isn't true reality -- only God is true reality, and in our present state of mortality we can only catch glimpses of Him through a clouded mirror. I also read "The Great Divorce", another C.S. Lewis book, earlier this summer, which I also highly recommend.

Ooooooh, and I'm also trying to get my grad school stuff in order: when to apply, when stuff I have to send them, deadline, etc. Ick. But at least I'm only applying to four....

Okay, I think I've procrastinated enough! Time to practice!

  • The English Don't Use Washcloths: My Trip to the UK

It's true, my friends: the English don't use washcloths. In fact, they don't even know what a washcloth is. The first night I was there, I asked the guy at the front desk if they had any at my hotel, and he gave me a quizzical look. This made removing my gobs of stage make-up two days later rather problematic. (got lots of soap in my eyes in the process)

So, my trip to England had basically two parts: the show in Buxton with "the cast", and then flitting around mid- and southern England with the fam. So, first for part one. Buxton is an extremely quaint, lovely little town south-east of Magister. We rehearsed basically non-stop as soon as I arrived in Buxton on Friday afternoon, right up until the performance, with was Sunday evening. The dress rehearsal was Sunday afternoon. But I actually survived, which was a pleasant surprise. The rake of the stage was so steep that you could see it onstage, so it actually wasn't as much of a problem (a slight rake it a lot harder to see, so you think it's level, until you fall over ). And the costumes were actually quite lovely -- we had thought they'd be really hideous. The hardest thing was probably getting used to the different set -- it wasn't quite what we were expecting, which threw some of us off, though it was lovely. It was also strange having a real orchestra instead of a piano. The orchestra was fabulous -- definitely the best I've ever worked with for a show (considering I've only done two other shows with orchestra, and one of 'em was quite awful ). However, we weren't used to hearing the more gradual attack of the strings (piano has a much more percussive, immediate onset -- you hear the sound as soon as the key it hit. Strings sound more gradually), so that made the music a bit...um.....exciting. We got off with the orchestra quite a lot, but our conductor was quite competent (yeah Florrie!!!), so we avoided disaster most of the time.

The actual performance was a rather terrifying experience -- we only got one shot at giving a "perfect" performance, which was being judged and compared to all the other shows in the festival. So I was scared to death for most of the first act, especially since I had both the first solo music line and the first spoken line in the show. Now that's pressure!!! But I don't think you could really tell from the audience. I was a afraid that I would cave under the pressure and have a complete blank, but I didn't, and by the end of the Act I finale, I finally started having fun. Oh, and added to all that, I had to adjust a number of the things I was doing, because the tenor I was playing opposite managed to sprain his ankle and mess up his knee two days before the performance, and thus couldn't do most of the choreography. Tenors are brilliant like that. But all in all, the show went well, and the adjudicator loved us! She commented that we all had great accents, which was good to hear -- I think we were the only all-American cast there. And she loved the three fairy leadlets (I was one of 'em). So I got a good review!!!

Now for part II: I know Laura will post about it, so I'll keep this short and you can read hers. After Buxton, we visited the south for a bit. First was Warwick Castle, which was rather disappointing, since they had basically turned it into a Renaissance-Faire-like theme park instead of leaving it as an historical monument. Alas. We also visited Oxford and heard evensong at Christ Church Cathedral -- that was probably the highlight of the trip for me. But I'm a weirdo like that. We also went to the Ashmoleom Art Museum, which was surprisingly fun (most of you know how I feel about going to art museums with Laura ). Next was Bath, which was absolutely delightful. We saw the Roman ruins there and had tea in the Jane Austen center. The architecture was absolutely stunning. I have to go back there next time. (and there WILL be a next time!!!) Our last stop was Shrewsbury, the home of the fictional character Brother Cadfael. We saw the cathedral and castle -- cute, but, well, compared to Bath, everything else pales....During this time, we were staying at the most adorable little bed-and-breakfast in an adorable little village called Bourton-on-the-Water. I will live there when I am a little old lady.

So, that's it, in brief. ("HA! brief??" you say -- trust me, it could've been a LOT longer. )

    "Well, I'm back."

  • Oh look at this! I'm posting again!! Aren't you excited???

    Shocking, I know.

So, I leave for England tonight! Which I'm sure most of you know, because it's pretty much all I ever talk about. Oops.

BUT I'm really looking forward to the experience. As far as the show is concerned, it's gonna pretty much be a "baptism by fire" -- we don't get to see the costumes until the day before the show, the dress rehearsal is the afternoon before we go on, there's only one orchestra rehearsal, and (this is the part that REALLY freaks me out) we only get one rehearsal on Buxton's raked stage. I hate raked stages. Especially since I have to dance on it in this show. A lot. (for those of you who don't know: "raked" means that the stage is built on a slight angle to allow the audience to see more of what is onstage. Otherwise things sorta disappear if they're upstage. So, the stage actually tilts downwards as you get closer to the audience. So it's like dancing on a wheel chair ramp. I have a hard time standing up on the things) Other than that, I think it's gonna be a blast -- the Buxton opera house where we perform is apparently huge and gorgeous (again, slightly intimidating, since we're not wearing mics). Then after that comes castles, cathedrals, and general frolicking!

Oh, and I didn't end up getting a fridge. We'll try again when we get back, when we embark on the great search for toaster ovens and electric kettles.

  • GUESS WHAT, PEEPS???

I'm still alive!!!! Would you believe it??? Apparently my xanga hates music (I don't know how I feel about this ), so now that I've taken it off it's stopped being mad at me.

So now I can post again! I going England tomorrow, which most of you probably know already. I am SOOOOOO excited, obviously. I was promised that I would get to see a cathedral. Then I will be able to die happy.

But now I am going refrigerator shopping, because I am living off-campus next year. (in a cute house across the street from a church. I like) Hopefully I'll remember to post again before I die!

  • Okay, so, I'm home right now, but I won't be in a day or two :-P

Yeah, so, I'm home on spring break. But I'm going back to school on Sunday. BLAH! Breaks are never long enough anymore!

Sorry I've been soooo bad about posting. I just get busy at school, and, yeah...the rest is history. So it's not that I don't love y'all, cuz I do.

This semester has been insane and awesome at the same time. Those of you who came to my recital can attest to that....teehee! The Music Man is turning out to be loads of fun! I wasn't too sure about it at first -- the music theatre kids aren't really "my type" -- but I managed to get to know some of 'em after all, and I've heard that our costumes are going to be pretty sweet. We worked with some of the set pieces in our rehearsal last Saturday, and whoa mamma, they were spiffy!

So, speaking of recital dresses, I found my senior voice recital dress...yes, it's ridiculously early, but it was actually my mom's idea to start looking this soon! So don't blame me! Teehee. But I love it. And you'll just have to come next year to see it . And to the piano recital, too. They're both gonna be smashing. Quite literally; I'm doing very really "bangy" pieces for piano -- Liszt and Chopin and all that jazz -- and I'm *hoping* to maybe convince Mrs. Sweet to let me do Queen of the Night for my voice recital. Who knows. We'll see. But I'd probably break some windows singing those arias. Teehee!!! (after my recital, she gave me all this insane coloratura rep....my larynx is now permanently lodged in my ears )

Now for prayer requests: I have a voice competition tomorrow....scariness...Also, I've been having a lot of trouble finding time in the day for Bible reading/prayer -- I know that I really really need more quiet time with God in my life, but that's next to impossible in college living in a dorm! So, just wanted to mention those.

I can't wait to see bunches of you tomorrow!

Are you satisfied now, Daniel???????????????????????? (though, considering that I've never gotten anywhere near 19 comments before, maybe I should wait another two months before posting again. Even though half of 'em were from you....)
